Pacquiao lawyer wants WBC explanation on ‘unpaid fees’

The camp of Manny Pacquiao on Friday sent a letter to the World Boxing Council (WBC) asking for a clarification on reports of the Filipino boxer’s alleged non-payment of sanction fees worth $30,000 for his lightweight title fight against David Diaz in June.

“Three hours ago I sent a letter to the WBC and I’m asking them what really is the problem about this alleged non-payment of the sanction fee,” Franklin “Jeng” Gacal, Pacquiao’s lawyer, told ABS-CBN’s morning show, “Umagang Kay Ganda” on Friday morning.

Gacal said he also made queries about alleged claims of the WBC that Pacquiao should pay an additional $100,000 in sanction fees for his upcoming fight against boxing legend Oscar dela Hoya in Las Vegas, Nevada on December 6.

The lawyer said that as far as he knows, the WBC has no sanction rights over the Pacquiao-dela Hoya fight. He said he thought they were supposed to pay the Nevada State Athletic Commission for the most-awaited bout.

Gacal said the letter was sent after he talked to Pacquiao about the alleged non-payment of sanction fees. He said the reports surprised Pacquiao and the boxer was unaware of the WBC’s demands.

A Reuters report on Thursday WBC presidet Jose Sulaiman announced in Cheng Du, China that Pacquiao should pay the $30,000-sanction fee for the Diaz fight in 15 days or he will be stripped of his lightweight title.
