To provide venue for aspiring boxers to improve their skills and develop into world-class athletes, Bacolod City is hosting the 1st Mayor Bing Inter-Cities Invitational Amateur Boxing Tournament on October 15-16, at Robinsons Place Bacolod.
Pugilists from the cities of General Santos, Bago, Cadiz and host Bacolod will fight for the title in different weight divisions.
Aside from Bacolod City officials led by Mayor Evelio Leoanardia, also expected to attend the opening ceremonies on Oct. 15 are local chief executives and representatives from participating cities, Amateur Boxing Association of Bacolod .president Ricardo Villanueva and ABAB Consultant Greg Jimena.
Secretary to the Mayor, Goldwyn Nifras, said in a press release that the tournament is in line with the city?s sports program and part of the 29th MassKara Festival celebration.
?The tournament will provide more experience and exposure for aspiring boxers. Also it will give additional attraction and entertainment to the people,? Nifras said.
He added that the city intends to make the tournament an annual or semi-annual activity for amateur boxers.
?This is the mayor?s effort to support sports (in general) in the city and boxing in particular. We know the enthusiasm and interest of the mayor as far as boxing is concerned, if we could convince more sponsors to join us, we hope to do this often next year,? Nifras said.
The tournament is also a way of discovering new talents and boxers, like Bacolod City?s adopted son Manny Pacquiao, he added.*
