Don?t you love the ignoramuses who keep egging Oscar de la Hoya on? I am talking about the mentally challenged who insist that, to really ?man up? as the in vogue saying goes, ODLH must climb into the ring with Antonio Margarito. These people give a new meaning to ?tonto,? meaning stupid and not a reference to the Lone Ranger?s kemo sabe sidekick.
Oscar is getting ready to ride off into the active fighter sunset, perhaps on Dec. 6, and he has made it more than clear that he is willing to battle Manny Pacquiao, the prime time Pinoy Destroyer, in that final chapter.
I mean, who in their right mind demands that a guy who fought Felix Trinidad, Bernard Hopkins, Shane Mosley, Ike Quartey, Mr. Floyd Mayweather and so many other tough cats, that he needs to display his masculinity in his final pro bout?
Certainly, over the course and fabric of a brilliant career, Oscar has more than earned to exclude at least one nationality from his final opponent list. Making that exclusion a fellow Mexican is really just good business sense. Despite what the Margarito adherents say, there is no huge public clamor on either side of the border, for Oscar-Antonio to happen.
There are sentimentalists and I admit to being among them who would like to see Oscar finish up with a victory. I think we really outnumber the haters who want to see Oscar beaten and bashed to the canvas or just simply thrashed in his adios bout.
But clever is as clever does and Oscar, through the lips of his pal since kindergarten and now GBP matchmaker Eric Gomez, has checkmated the people in Margaritoville.
At Oscar?s behest, Gomez has floated the shining name of Paul Williams, who beat Antonio, as a possible foe for the Oscar finale.
I don?t believe it or buy it for a nanosecond. It falls into the ?yeah, right? category along with the Obama insiders whispering that Hillary Clinton was on the possible VP list.
But, even for speculative purposes, you?ve got to admit mentioning Tall Paul, the powerful southpaw, is 10,000 times better than the poppycock about Latin Fake Sergio Mora, Let?s see if Mora can clear the (Vernon) Forrest.
Like I say, I can?t even imagine Oscar hopping into the ring to face all the problems Williams poses.
But, with this one subtle stroke, OLDH has more or less put the mute button on the Margarito backers.
It looks as though the Oscar Derby will come to a merciful conclusion on Thursday. There are still ways to make Pacman happy and make the Big Circus bout a reality.
If it was simply up to Bob Arum and Richie Schaefer, the contracts for Manny-Oscar would be half completed the lawyers already. But they can only get the green light from the fighters.
Right now, the color of the signal is a flashing yellow, not a red but not a green light either.
But perhaps the oversized egos of MP and ODLH won?t let that happen. Scratch one amazing ring spectacle if that is the case.
Oscar could choose Joe Sixpack as his final bout opponent and millions will watch it on TV.
He?s earned the right to that free pass also it says here.
The pitch on Paul Williams is just a curve ball but it?s a brilliant pitch.
If Oscar chooses Paul Williams, I will stroll, in all my White Gorilla splendor, naked in front of the Golden Boy Offices in downtown LA.
Talk bout your public spectacle.
White Gorilla, sin ropas.
Talk about your public offense.
That?s how sure I am that floating Paul Williams? name is only a diversionary tactic.
