Structure is something that can either create a path towards something clear and definitive or it can constrict and limit creativity or flexibility when it comes to anything in life. Unlike the free roaming Marley, most of us have no choice but to adhere to a life filled with structure whether it be work, school, or happy hour. Marley adheres to the life of waking up, breathing air, and then proceeding to do anything and everything his heart and thirst desires.
Unless a tournament is constructed within boxing, there is relatively no structure when it comes to why certain match-ups occur and why others fail to take place.
This coming December 6, Oscar De la Hoya has seemingly decided to make this his last and final appearance inside the ring as a professional prize fighter. He?s currently competing somewhere around the junior middle/welterweight range and is searching for the ?right? opponent to engage with.
For one reason or another, current 135 pound lightweight belt-holder Manny Pacquiao has been mentioned as the front-runner for the ?Golden Boy?s? farewell bout.
Other than the fact that Pacquiao is completely under-sized for the 147 pound weight class, it?s difficult to fathom why this bout is even being mentioned. It seems a bit much to ask a fighter to leap frog three weight classes in the span of less than ten months. (Pacquiao fought at 130 in March, 2008)
Should the Brit still be lingering around the 200 pound weight class, would anybody expect Kelly Pavlik to step up to the cruiserweight division to take on David Haye?
How about Antonio Margarito versus Mikkel Kessler?
Juan Manuel Marquez versus Paul Williams anyone?
Absurd match-ups? Of course they are especially when you have a legitimate challenge staring you in the face that still has boxing fans across the world buzzing in excitement.
This is why I pose the question to you boxing fans:
What fight would you rather see transpire in December?
Oscar De la Hoya versus Manny Pacquiao or Oscar De la Hoya versus Antonio Margarito?
It?s a simple question with no real agenda behind it. I?m just wondering out loud as the fans will ultimately decide the success behind a fight.
PS. Why not Margarito-Pacquiao?
