Loose lips sink ships. Loose lips can even sink a boxing battleship such as the S.S. Manny Pacquiao. With that in mind, promoter Bob Arum told Boxingconfidential.com Friday, he and Megamanny have asked trainer Freddie Roach to zip his flapping lips.
?I have asked Freddie to be quiet,? Arum said from Las Vegas. ?And so has Manny. All these public remarks about Oscar de la Hoya and about how Oscar can?t pull the trigger anymore are not helpful to our cause.
?I go on Filipino radio and all I do is praise Oscar. Freddie has to got to be quiet because his remarks are just pissing Oscar off. Look, Freddie is the trainer and it?s not his place to be making these kind of public comments about Oscar, not now when we?re trying to negotiate a fight. We want Oscar to come to the table and then we can see if we can put together this Dec. 6 fight with him and Manny.
?It may be Oscar?s ?Last Hurrah.? Oscar wants to fight on Dec. 6 at the MGM Grand and I am hoping he will want to fight either of my guys, Miguel Cotto or Manny. If we can make Manny against Oscar, then Freddie can say whatever the fuck he wants.?
With Puerto Rican banger Cotto stepping into the ring July 26 against Mexican bralwer Antonio Margarito, Arum said he is not sure what the boxing public prefers, Manny or Miguel against Oscar.
?I?ve got no idea on that. Both are huge fights. Cotto would open as a big (betting) favorite over Oscar and, if Oscar chooses Manny, then Oscar would go off as a big favorite.?
Arum said that, even if Margarito upsets Cotto, Oscar would not want to fight another fighter of Mexican heritage in his ring farewell.
?They?ve made that much clear. Oscar is not going into his final fight against another Mexican. That won?t happen.?
