Mexican Archie Solis denied the fighting Donaire family a spot in the record books Saturday night (Sunday morning in Manila) as he repulsed the spirited challenge of Filipino challenger Glenn Donaire at the Palenque De La Expo arena in Hermosillo, Mexico.
The Mexican media reported that Solis, making the seventh defense of the International Boxing Federation (IBF) light-flyweight (108 lbs) crown, won by scores of 120-107 (Alfredo Polanco), 120-108 (Ruben Garcia) and 120-108 (Joe Garcia).
But those who saw the fight say the scores did not reflect what happened during the competitive showdown where the California-based Glenn, brother of reigning IBF fly king Nonito, connected with telling blows that had the rugged Solis on the ropes.
But Solis? ring generalship prevailed as Donaire failed to come up with a blow that could have turned the tables around.
Donaire thus becomes the third Filipino title defense victim of Solis, who had previously knocked out Rodel Mayol and Bert Batawang.
Glenn, the heavy underdog, was aiming to pull off an upset in the hopes of joining Nonito as current world champions.
The scenic city of Hermosillo, almost 1,000 miles from Mexico City, is also the venue where another Filipino fighter, Rolando Pascua, fought and failed against Julio Cesar Borboa in a bid to wrest the IBF junior-bantam (115 lbs) diadem in late-1993
