LAS VEGAS ? Freddie Roach said David Diaz, who absorbed a terrible beating from Manny Pacquiao, should spend a little time before he makes his next move.
Roach even went to the extent of saying Diaz, at 32, can consider retirement.
?I?d like to see him retire or probably at least take a six-month rest,? said Roach, who was right when he said even weeks before the fight that Diaz cannot stand more than nine rounds with Pacquiao.
Diaz took so much punishment against Pacquiao and if not for his great will to survive could have gone down much earlier, probably as early as the second, third or fourth rounds.
Roach said the Diaz camp will have a lot of thinking to do once they settle in after the bloody experience.
?I think they have to regroup and think about it and look at what he (Diaz) sees. Then he can decide what he?s going to do with his career,? said Roach.
But again, he said, Diaz should take his time.
?He doesn?t need to get back to the ring in a short while. But right now is not the best time to make the choice,? Roach went on.
The two-time Trainer of the Year in the US said days before the fight that Diaz would need a miracle to survive Pacquiao.
And Diaz countered by saying he didn?t need one, and that all he needed was his will and the blessings of the Lord.
