Certain guys already have dates to the Winterball so that basically eliminates them from dancing with the ?Golden Boy? this coming December 6. Being that this will supposedly be Oscar?s farewell bout (I don?t believe any boxer?s ?retirements? until I see them at least 150 pounds overweight), everyone including Michael Marley himself will be vying as De la Hoya?s opponent.
Here is the list of fighters that won?t be in the running for December being that they are seemingly already contractually obligated to face off against another homosapean:
Ricky Hatton? fighting Paulie Malignaggi in November
Floyd Mayweather Jr? retired and might never do business with GBP ever again.
Sergio Mora? rematch clause with Vernon Forrest
Winky Wright? nobody wants to see that fucking fight
On the other hand? here is the list of viable options for the ?Golden Boy?:
Manny Pacquiao? longshot, freakshow-type of fight being that he will be making the initial leap to 135 later this month.
Paul Williams? just came off a statement first round knockout victory over Carlos Quintana
John Duddy? limited middleweight slugger that could possibly captivate the American public.
Antonio Margarito? should he get by Miguel Cotto. Classic west coast Mexican fight.
Miguel Cotto? should he get by Antonio Margarito. Classic rivalry between Puerto Rico and Mexico.
Michael Marley? who wouldn?t want to see Oscar beat the stuffing out of the biggest turkey on the east side of the Mississippi. The over/under starts from the parking lot as nobody is quite sure whether Marley can actually make it all the way ringside without stopping for a hotdog, two quarts of mustard, and a gallon of sauerkraut.
In reality, there are no huge names in boxing other than Oscar De la Hoya himself. You can match virtually any of these opponents with Oscar and the fight will sell decently. On the other hand, put just as much time, promotion, money, and effort as was done with the first Mayweather bout and you?d surely create another well known commodity in the boxing world.
The longer boxing decides to continue recycling old names that sell marginally well, the longer it will take to actually create new names from fighters which are still in their physical primes and are actually dedicated to the sport of boxing. I howl at the thought of all the money, time, and effort that went into creating Mayweather Jr. into a somewhat well known fighter being that he abruptly decided to call it quits.
That wouldn?t happen with fighters like Cotto or Margarito that?s for sure?
