GIVE Nonito Donaire, Jr. a week or two before he can finally say he is back.
Contacted by www.sportsnews.ph, Donaire?s astute manager Cameron Dunkin said everything is still up in the air with regards to the next bout of the Filipino world flyweight champion.
According to Dunkin, the only definite at the moment is that they are now a promotional free agent, making them open to any meaningful offer regardless of the promoter.
The name of WBC super flyweight ruler Cristian Mijares as Donaire?s next opponent is all talk at the moment as what Team Donaire got was a simple call from the Mexican?s promoter Lou DiBella proposing the match-up.
?There?s no date, venue or figures that we discussed with Lou. He just gave me a call and asked if we can make the fight,? said Dunkin in an overseas call Tuesday morning (Manila time).
Dunkin wants to carefully see what?s on the table for one of his prized fighters, a move they?ve been longing to do since their tumultuous relationship with their now estranged promoter Gary Shaw.
And part of that pondering is a proposed July 26 bout beneath the Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito face-off which, added Dunkin, is still not a sure thing as there maybe a more bigger fight that might turn up in the coming days.
Dunkin disclosed that Donaire?s lawyer Michael Miller asked his permission if he can talk with Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) and see if there?s any reasonable deal they can work out.
Dunkin said the name of Abner Mares, a GBP prot?g?, was mentioned as possible foe for Donaire.
Donaire?s last fight was December of last year when he successfully defended his International Boxing Federation 9IBF) flyweight crown against Mexican Luis Maldonado. Donaire won the belt via a shock 5th round TKO over brassy Armenia-born Aussie Vic Darchinyan July of 2007 in Connecticut.
