Nonito Donaire, the Filipino who exploded the indestrictible myth of Vic Darhinyan, may not be the Lord of the Flies much longer.
Donaire and manager Cameron Dunkin are tired of sitting around waiting for a phone call from promoter Big Gary Shaw as to who Donaire?s next 112-pound opponent will be.
Dunkin told me Wednesday that it?s inevitable that Donaire will migrate north to the more lucrative 115 and 118-pound weight classes. At 115 pounds, Donaire could figure in as a foe for red-hot champs Cristian Mijares or Fernando Montiel. (Mijares holds the WBC and WBA titles while Montiel is WBO champion.)
?It looks like that?s where the money is,? Dunkin said. ?We could after either one of them because Mijares has been impressive since he beat Jorge Arce and Montiel is looking strong as well.?
Shaw told Dunkin he has Donaire tentatively penciled in for an Aug. 2 date (Showtime) but that is now 60 days away and no confirmation has come.
?I don?t know why Nonito should be second-billed to Darchinyan, a guy he demolished,? Dunkin said. ?Why should Nonito be the opening bout for him? Shaw told me he?s not sure Showtime will take Donaire right now.?
