Don King made a royal bid to win it. And win it, King did, at the WBO purse bid procedure held in Puerto Rico Tuesday morning,
The Teflon Do nearly doubled up on the only other bidder, Oscar de la Hoya and his Golden Boy Promotions.
King?s bid to become sole promoter of the mandatory WBO lightweight title bout between his champ, Nate Campbell, and Oscar?s guy, interim champ Joel Casamayor, was $1.22 million.
The Golden bid was $571,000.
Because Campbell and Casamayor both have championship belts, the purse must be split 50-50.
The WBO said that once the fight date is firmly set, the bout cannot be postponed.
It may be meaningless but King?s representative mentioned a tentative date of August 27 and possible sites as Florida, the UK or Las Vegas.
If it does wind up in the UK, it might be in conjunction with an Amir Khan bout. Khan, promoted by Frank Warren, is now the $2 WBO lightweight contender. He was ranked first until two-time undefeated champion Joan Guzman took that spot after shedding the group?s 130-pound title voluntarily.
