Consider this a public service to one and all in the Philippines. God knows we at Boxingconfidential.com love and respect our Pinoy fans all over the globe. They love Manny Pacquiao, we cover Manny like a blanket, and we love them.
There?s a con man afoot in the Philippines. A boxing con man. His name is Bobby Bostick and, when it comes to boxing, he has a reverse Midas touch.
I say reverse Midas because everything in boxing that BB touches turn to pigeon droppings.
If had to pick just a few adjectives which constantly crop in discussions about Mr, Bostick with those in the boxing business, I would say that “unsavory” crops up most often. “Unreliable” gets a lot of mentions along with this pbhrase, “never delivers.” In other words, UPS asks what can Brown do for you, while Bostick asks, what can you do for Bostick.
And that’s what the Bobinator’s pals say about him!
Magic Several sources claim that Bostick’s business front is some church or tax-exempt “religious” orgnaization. His dismal record would suggest that it’s the Church Of The Big Shows That Never Take Place.
In other words, there is a lot of smoke and mirrors around the Right Reverend Bostick’s dog and pony routine. He may wear a 10- gallon hat but you can bet he is about seven gallons low.
I first spoke to this hustler after Carlos Baldomir scored a shocker victory over Zab Judah in New York.
That stunning upset had the phones ringing off the hook. I was the only Sycuan Ringside Promotions rep in Baldomir?s camp in New York until a couple of days before the fight.
I informed Sycuan officials that, three days before the bout, the Argentine ?Rocky? was seven pounds over the weight limit. But Baldy bit down, made the weight and scored the stirring upset.
After Judah lost, big offers rolled in. This one offered $1.5 million for Arturo Gatti, that one offered $1.1 million for Floyd Mayweather. Eventually Baldy fought and beat the shopworn Gatti and then lost to Magic Mayweather both but made enough money to take care of his family for life.
Then Bostick called me.
?I am prepared,? Bostick said with a Southern twang, ?to offer as much as $250,000 to Baldomir to fight Kermit Cintron.?
When I stopped laughing, Bostick asked me where to fax in his idiotic offer. I gave him a Sycuan fax number in San Diego.
?Bobby,? I said, ?maybe you want to spare a tree. Because that offer is a waste of time and paper.?
Warning to our Pinoy brothers and sisters: if this guy shakes your hands, count your fingers. His name in American boxing circles is mud and I doubt he will come any cleaner in the Philippines.
Long ago, I had a girlfriend who came from Bacalod. She often used a doubting expression that could be readily applied to wind man Bostick.
“Tell it to the Marines!”
It takes a special kind of guy to tell a fighter to leave his lawyer in the dark. But they’re saying that is BB’s line of patter on his Filipino swing.
You?ve been warned.
Bobby Bostick is not recommended by the Boxing Better Business Bureau. His specialty is monkey business.
