PRO BOXING 101: HOW TO SCORE A FIGHT

San Francisco, CA- Seeing many people seem to have at times extreme difficulty in objectively scoring a fight, I will lay out the criteria utilized in professional boxing, this in addition to giving you some tips on becoming a good judge of pugilism.

THE FOUR COMPONENTS OF SCORING

1. Clean Punching: This is the key part of scoring a boxing match, clean and effective blows being landed.

2. Effective Aggressiveness: Sometimes confused with one fighter simply coming forward and throwing blows, “effective aggressiveness” means going at your opponent in a manner that scores points. Many times you will hear TV?s talking heads talk about “ineffective aggressiveness.” This is the fighter that’s putting forth aggression that amounts to nil. Fighter “A” might be coming forward, but at the same time he is being schooled by fighter “B.”

3. Defense: Making the other guy miss. This area of scoring is given to a fighter that is slipping or blocking blows being hurled his way. Besides component 1, this is the second easiest of the criteria used to score boxing.

4. Ring Generalship: This is the most difficult of the criteria utilized in scoring a professional boxing match. To make it real simple, ring generalship is awarded to the man/woman imposing their will.

PACMAN-MARQUEZ II ON HBO SATURDAY

The much awaited replay of the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez match, originally airing last week on HBO Pay Per View, will be shown this Saturday be shown on regular HBO.

PEDRO’S RULES TO SCORE OBJECTIVELY

A: Turn off the volume of your television set. This prevents the commentators, who at times are either shilling or cheerleading for one particular(usually the house) fighter. Although you might find it unentertaining to watch a silent screen, this is very important in coming to an impartial score.

B: Score each three-minute round as it were a fight in itself. In other words, you are not scoring the whole fight per se, but 12 little fights one by one.

SCORING IS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE FOLKS

Although you might think it is difficult to score fights, it is really elementary. You need to cast aside, at least for three minutes at a time, your bias or prejudice for a particular boxer. Some divide the round into three-one minute fights. This is an easy way to score in a more objective way. Sometimes this is real simple, other times, when styles conflict, it is more difficult.

DIVORCE YOURSELF FROM ?YOUR? FIGHTER

The key for astute followers and fans of professional boxing is to NOT get emotionally involved. Divorce yourself, at least for the three minutes of action from the fighter you want to win. By employing the aforementioned, you should be able to become a much better boxing jurist.
