CURRENT world flyweight champion Nonito Donaire, Jr. had one of the best times of his life when he met former president Joseph Estrada recently in San Juan.
Donaire, accompanied by girlfriend and taekwondo expert Rachel Marcial, had lunch with Estrada together with the former leader?s son, San Juan mayor Joseph Victor Ejercito at the Estrada residence in Polk Street. Donaire was also met by former senator Loi Estrada.
The meet was arranged by Cucuy Elorde, daughter of the country?s revered all-time boxing hero Gabriel ?Flash? Elorde.
Estrada later on said that athletes should never enter politics while they are still actively involved in their sport.
Estrada gained great success in politics because of his achievements as a popular actor. He however stopped making movies when he won the Vice-presidency in 1992 and eventually the highest position of the land in 1998. Estrada was eased out of power in 2001.
Estrada said politicians have no place in sports and should not be allowed by the government to hold vital positions in running its affairs.
Estrada meanwhile wishes Donaire all the best in his upcoming fights as he feels the young fighter is fit to become a legitimate model among the youths.
Donaire is set to defend his flyweight crowns against Australia-based Lebanese Hussein Hussein on April 18 in Dubai. The event will be the first ever world boxing championship to be held in the Middle East.
Donaire is now in the US where he is training for his upcoming fight against Hussein.
