Canoy goes for WBO Orient feather title

ZAMBOANGA CITY–There’s a promise of world-class competition when big-time boxing returns here Saturday with a big show topbilling local fighter Eric Canoy’s quest for the WBO Orient featherweight crown.

Rep. Erbie Fabian, acknowledged godfather of boxing in Zamboanga, is putting up the event with the support of promoter Sammy Gello-ani of SGG Sports and Promotions.

Canoy and Tanzanian opponent Rajabu Maoja came in at 124 lb. in Friday’s weigh-in at the Marcian Garden Hotel supervised by the WBO’s Leon Panoncillo.

“This will be a followup to our initial event held last December dubbed ‘Golpe-Golpe Na Zamboanga.'” said Fabian. “We are here to make good on our promise to help the youth in this part of Mindanao.”

Canoy has been on a knockout spree lately, stopping Edmund Devilleres, War Bartiquil and Sairung Rajah Gym in a prelude to Saturday’s big fight at the Zamboanga Coliseum.

“If Canoy wins this fight, we plan to put him on the April card of Gerry Pe?alosa, or one of the cards in the United States,” said Fabian.

Maoja is himself coming off a fourth-round knockout win over fellow Tanzanian Daudi Muhunzi in earning a 12-4, 4 KOs slate.

“I will make sure that I take the belt with me,” Maoja said.

John Mark Apolinario of the Mayor Jojo Lopez Stable takes on Brix Bomb Ray in the main undercard.
