Bottles thrown after Aussie boxer’s draw

Vic Darchinyan’s trainer Billy Hussein was struck on the head by a plastic bottle in a chaotic aftermath to his fighter’s controversial draw with Filipino Z Gorres in Cebu City in the Philippines.

Hussein said bottles were thrown three or four times during and after the IBF world title super flyweight eliminator, in which Darchinyan knocked his opponent down in the first and ninth rounds and the Australian was floored in the second.

“It was a plastic bottle full of water, I got smashed but I’m alright,” Hussein told AAP by phone from Cebu City.

“I copped a bottle in the head at the end of the fight and we got bottled three or four times during the fight.

“After the first round and then in the second when Vic got knocked down, they started throwing bottles as well.

“They cleared the ring and gave Vic another five seconds to recover and then at the end of the fight threw bottles before the decision was announced.”

The normally affable trainer was even more upset with the decision of the judges, adamant Darchinyan had done more than enough to win.

Hussein felt New Zealand referee Lance Revill erred in disallowing two more knockdowns against Gorres.

The Filipino judge scored in favour of Darchinyan, the Thai official for Gorres, while the Australian arbiter scored it a draw.

“Of course he (Darchinyan) had done enough to win, how do you knock a guy down four or five times and not get the win?” Hussein said.

He was critical of Revill’s performance and said the Darchinyan camp was lodging a protest about the result with the IBF.

Darchinyan’s manager Elias Nasser said any rematch would happen in the United States rather than the Philippines, but Hussein doubted Gorres would want to fight his boxer again.
