Gorres? world bid at stake tonight

CEBU City ? Z Gorres gets a second chance to rekindle his world title bid when he fights former world champion Vic Darchinyan tonight at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino here.

Nicknamed “The Dream,” Gorres climbs up the ring aware of Darchinyan?s feared reputation as a slugger, but the 25-year-old native of Mandaue City is undaunted.

Gorres is getting inspiration from compatriot Nonito Daonaire Jr. who inflicted Darchinyan?s first and only defeat during their International Boxing Federation (IBF) world title fight last year in the United States.

“He?s not invincible. Filipino rin ang nakatalo sa kanya,” Gorres, who holds a 27-2-1 record including 15 KOs, said. “I?m not scared of Vic Darchinyan.”

Gorres is hoping to come up with an impressive win against the cocky and hard-hitting Darchinyan to erase the memory of his controversial split decision to World Boxing Organization (WBO) super-flyweight champion Fernando Montiel last year.

A victory here will set up Gorres for a shot at the International Boxing Federation (IBF) super-flyweight crown of Russian Dmitri Kirilov.

The 12-round fight, dubbed “Now or Never”, will be telecast over Solar Sports at 8 p.m.

Darchinyan, an Australian of Armenian descent, stands in the way of Gorres? dream. He has lost only once in 30 professonal fights, winning 23 of them by knockouts.

“I?m confident of beating him. I came here to destroy him,” he said.

The two fighters are expected to make the 115-pound limit during the scheduled weigh-in last night at the Corral Room of the Waterfront Hotel.

Lance Revill, considered the top referee in New Zealand, will be the third man on the ring, while Jon Davis of the Philippines, Montol Surichand of Thailand and Cec Perkins of Australia are the three fight judges.

The boxing card that starts at 6 p.m., is being co-promoted by ALA Promotions and Gary Shaw Promotions in cooperation with Solar Sports.

The 12-round slugfest will also be shown on ABC-5 on Sunday.
