Z GORRES hopes to emulate the feat of Nonito Donaire, Jr. when he battles Armenian fighter Vic Darchinyan on Feb. 2 at the Cebu Waterfront Hotel and Casino.
Getting personal tips from Donaire, Gorres feels he has the advantage to beat the former Sydney Olympian.
For the record, it was Donaire who dealt Darchinyan his first ever loss in 30 professional fights, pulling off a stunning fifth round knockout of the heavy-handed warrior now based in Australia to wrest the International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight title in July last year in Connecticut, USA.
“Z just has to stick to his game plan. He has to move and move since he?s a lot quicker than Darchinyan, who really has a power punch,” said the reigning IBF 112-pound king.
“He needs to jab a lot and try to outbox Darchinyan,” Donaire added.
Since that upset loss, Darchinyan has managed to bounce back, scoring a 12-round knockout of Filipino Federico Catubay to raise his ring record to 30-1, including 23 by knockouts.
Gorres, the pride of Mandaue-Cebu and fighting out of the famed ALA boxing stable, is likewise coming off a win ? an eighth-round technical knockout of Eric Ortiz that primed himself up for his face-off with the fighter who owns one of the most devastating knockout punches in boxing today.
The 25-year-old Filipino prospect lost in his attempt for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) super-flyweight title following a controversial split decision over Mexican Fernando Montiel a year ago also in Cebu.
But Gorres said he already put that sad experience behind and is ready to face the challenge again as proven by his spectacular win over Ortiz in Sacramento, California last August.
“Pinag-hahandaan ko po talaga ito. Ayaw ko na muling biguin pa ang mga kababayan ko,” said Gorrez.
Winner of the 12-round fight dubbed ?Now or Never? will be covered and aired by Solar Sports and ABC-5, will face reigning IBF super-flyweight champion Dmitri Kirilov of Russia.
