The idea of turning Cinco de Mayo into a major fight weekend began with Oscar De La Hoya, was enhanced by Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr., and appears to have been perfected by Canelo Alvarez.
Some of boxing’s biggest events of the last two decades have taken place on the first Saturday in May, including 2007 when De La Hoya and Mayweather squared off on May 5. It marked De La Hoya’s third and final fight on the marquee weekend, but Mayweather would continue the pattern, fighting five more times in early May, culminating in his showdown with Pacquiao on May 2, 2015.
