Edgar Berlanga overpowers gutsy Jason Quigley

Edgar Berlanga improved to 21-0 Saturday night at The Theater at Madison Square Garden. Berlanga defeated gutsy Jason Quigley over 12 rounds.

The scores were 116-108, 116-108, and 118-106.

Berlanga (21-0, 16 KOs) floored Quigley in rounds three, five, and twice in the 12th and final round. Quigley (20-3, 14 KOs) held his own in the first two rounds, scoring with a few right hands. Berlanga stalked and waited to rock. The time came in round three. Berlanga dropped Quigley with a combination. Quigley was down again in round five and bleeding from his nose. No quit in the Irishman. He hurt Berlanga with a crisp left hook in round seven. Berlanga was back in charge later, utilizing his jab and power. In round 12, Berlanga sent Quigley to the canvas twice, though the former title challenger beat the count.

“I give it a C,” said Berlanga of his performance. The New Yorker went the distance for the fifth successive time.

Adam Kownacki was hoping to end a personal three-fight losing streak. Hoping can only do so much.

Underdog Joe Cusumano stopped Kownacki in the eighth round on the undercard of the Berlanga versus Quigley bout. Cusumano (22-4, 20 KOs) floored Kownacki in the opening round, but the popular Polish fighter battled back well.

By round eight, will aside, Kownacki was in terrible shape.

More hope – that Kownacki retires (again).
