In a bold move to resuscitate the career of Jerwin Ancajas, renowned strength and conditioning coach Memo Heredia has been called in to turn the former world champion into a lean and mean fighting machine.
Ancajas has been training in the United States since January as the former International Boxing Federation super-flyweight king attempts to win a title at bantamweight.
After reigning for six years, Ancajas hit a wall when he ran into Argentine Fernando Martinez.
Making the tenth defense of the International Boxing Federation 115-lb throne, Ancajas was upset by the ever-busy South American in 2022.
Thinking that he was not just in peak form, Ancajas challenged Martinez again but wound up getting beat once again.
Making 115 lbs had been mentioned as the culprit as Ancajas faded towards the endgame both times.
It was great learning that Ancajas is working with him.
Now that he has decided to campaign at 118 lbs, Ancajas feels that he will be good enough to get back on top.
Heredia, widely credited for transforming Juan Manuel Marquez into a monster when he fought Manny Pacquiao in December 2012, believes his involvement should make Ancajas fitter and even stronger.
“We’ll turn him into a little beast,” Heredia told Daily Tribune from Las Vegas where Ancajas and other Filipino boxers are camping out and waiting for title shots.
Heredia, a former track and field athlete, is one of the best in strength and conditioning, according to boxing’s A-listers.
It was great learning that Ancajas is working with him.
Now that Memo is taking charge of Ancajas in terms of physical conditioning, expect some changes in the fighter’s mindset and overall preparedness the next time he fights.
