Astrolabio heats up Vegas

World title hopeful Vincent Astrolabio hasn’t been missing a beat in his buildup for a crack at the vacant World Boxing Organization bantamweight crown on 13 May in Stockton, California.

In fact, Astrolabio, who battles Australian Jason Moloney for the WBO 118-lb throne, is doing wonders in his Las Vegas training camp under chief tactician Nonoy Neri and strength and conditioning coach Memo Heredia.

“Vincent’s punches are not only getting stronger,” Neri said yesterday from Sin City.

“They’re fast as well.”

‘He is looking sharp.’

That quickness is being credited to the work being done by Heredia, who is one of the best in the business.

“He is looking sharp,” Heredia, who was Juan Manuel Marquez’s fitness mentor during the fourth fight with Manny Pacquiao in December 2012.

Astrolabio, 25, enters the ring at the Stockton Arena with an 18-3 record with 13 knockouts and is peaking at the right time.

Moloney, 32, parades a 25-2 mark with 19 knockouts, including several over Filipino rivals.

But in his biggest fight, Moloney was knocked out by Naoya Inoue in 2020.

Astrolabio will be the clear underdog in the scheduled 12-rounder but a very line one at that.

The Filipino has been making lots of heads turn as of late, having beaten the Cuban master Guillermo Rigondeaux and Russian Nikolai Potapov in his last couple of fights.

If victorious, Astrolabio will join minimumweight Melvin Jerusalem and superbantamweight Marlon Tapales as the country’s reigning world champions.
