Vic Darchinyan has his old cockiness back ahead of his February 2 showdown with Filipino Z Gorres in Cebu City. “Gorres is a good fighter, but I am going to make him look like nothing,” Darchinyan says. “When I hit him he will go. “He gave Fernando Montiel a good fight. I want to show him that he is nothing and all the other world champions will see I am back to my best. It will be like before when I was the flyweight champion. “After I knock Gorres out no one will want to fight me.”
Trainer Billy Hussein is delighted with the way Darchinyan 29-1 (23 KOs) is training and is impressed with his determination to become world champ again after he suffered a shock KO loss to Nonito Donaire in July, that cost Darchinyan his IBF flyweight crown.
The fight with Gorres is an official eliminator for the IBF super-flyweight title and Darchinyan is focused on winning a title fight with new champ Dmitri Kirilov in Moscow.
Darchinyan has foregone celebrations for his 32nd birthday and is sparring heavy -hitting Russian super-middleweight Victor Oganov.
The 25-year-old Gorres 27-2-1 (15 KOs) tackles Darchinyan over 12 rounds at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel.
On the undercard Filipino Romeo Jakosalem will meet Chris John’s chief sparring partner, hot Aussie prospect William Kickett.
