Gorres out to tame Darchinyan

FILIPINO STYLIST Z Gorres said yesterday he will be ready for whatever Armenian Vic “Raging Bull” Darchinyan will bring to the table when they lock horns at the grand ballroom of the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu City on Feb. 2.

In an interview over DZSR 918, Gorres said in straight English that he has been getting himself primed with the help of his trainers as he anticipates a rough and tough duel with the fearsome Auatraliabased banger.

“We are working very hard in the gym,” Gorres said during a teleconference call from Cebu. “I know that Darchinyan is tough and strong but we are doing everything in the gym with my trainers.”

The Gorres-Darchinyan brawl is an International Boxing Federation (IBF) super-flyweight title elimination bout.

Darchinyan was on the other line direct from Australia.

“I have great respect for Gorres and I think he is a great fighter and skillful but I am preparing hard for this fight and I want to show that I am going to be back,” Darchinyan said, who had lost the IBF flyweight crown on a shocking fifth-round knockout to California-based Filipino Nonito Donaire in July last year in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

“My concentration now is on Gorres,” Darchinya, a southpaw like the Cebu-based Gorres, added.

Since being knocked out cold by Donaire?s counter left hook to the jaw, Darchinyan has bounced back by stopping rugged Filipino Federico Catubay in the 12th round last October.

Gorres is coming off an eighth-round stoppage of one-time world champion Eric Ortiz of Mexico.

Gorres is a protege of Cebu boxing patron Tony Aldeguer, who will put up next month?s slugfest before an expected sellout crowd.

Gorres, 25, has a 27-2-1 winloss-draw card with 15 knockouts, while Darchinyan, 32, represented Armenia in the 2000 Sydney Olympics where he advanced up to the second round, holds a 29–1 card with 23 knockouts.

Darchinyan said that should he disposes of Gorres, he will eye a rematch with Donaire.

But Gorres is upbeat about his chances of duplicating what Donaire did last year.
