Is this the right time for the Trilogy? Prior to May 7, 2022, Canelo Alvarez was on an unfathomable hot streak that saw him capture multiple world championships and overcome some of the most elite boxers he’d faced in his career. The Mexican standout was owning his ‘dare to be great’ slogan, and, for the most part, it favored him with consecutive years of success.
Unfortunately, the 32-year-old suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of Dmitry Bivol earlier this year, as Canelo attempted to add the WBA light heavyweight title to his accomplishments.
A significant size disadvantage in unison with an elite-level performance from the champ saw Canelo suffer a unanimous decision loss.
Instead of attempting to rematch and rectify his loss to Bivol, Canelo will instead return to the ring versus his old rival in the shape of Gennady Golovkin.
In the previous two years, Canelo has fought on five occasions, winning four of those contests against Caleb Plant, Callum Smith, and Billy Joe Saunders, before his surprise loss to Bivol last time out.
Golovkin, on the other hand, has fought just twice in the same time frame.
Former world champion Sergio Mora believes that Canelo’s schedule could be detrimental heading into the trilogy fight.
“As far as the X’s and O’s and who wins the fight, no, it hasn’t changed. I still favor Canelo, and I would favor Canelo maybe even by stoppage.” Mora told the media.
“What does make things interesting is Canelo’s coming off a loss. Canelo is bitter about Golovkin, and they know each other well.
“Golovkin is coming off a win, and he’s not going to have to sacrifice to make 160. He can be stronger and bigger at 168.
“They’ve felt each other’s power. That fight ends in a knockout, and both of them have the power to end it with a knockout. I would favor Canelo, of course, but I’m not going to write off Golovkin totally.
“Golovkin is still a monster and has only technically lost to Canelo. A lot of people think that he didn’t even lose that. You can’t just say, ‘well, he’s 40.’ Scratch that.
“Golovkin is one of these guys that still has power, can still take a big punch, lives a clean lifestyle, and is coming off some impressive victories. So that’s the momentum going in his direction.
“For Canelo, maybe it’s the flipside. He’s been fighting since he was 15 years old; he’s coming off a loss, the injuries might be catching up to him, and he might be burned out.
“You can flip that coin so many ways, but I’m excited because trilogies end in knockouts, and we’re going to get a knockout in this one.”
Golovkin cannot be underestimated The most notable aspect of this fight is that both men are a year older since their last war. Alvarez 32, Golovkin 40.
However, even though he’s 40-years-old, GGG is still turning heads with his in-ring performances and has already proved why he’s one of the best ever to do it in the middleweight division.
He’s on a 4-0 consecutive win streak since losing to Canelo in the rematch, and following the dismantling of Ryota Murata, there’s every reason to believe he can win September’s trilogy.
