It?s not only Freddie Roach but also Manny Pacquiao himself who?s laughing at the proposed ?Dream Match? between Oscar dela Hoya and the Filipino superstar.
Pacquiao, scheduled to fly to the US this morning, sounded amused and amazed when told of the great possibility of him fighting Dela Hoya in September next year.
Pacquiao laughed at the idea.
?Did Bob Arum really say that?? the Filipino super-featherweight (130 lbs) sensation said over the phone. He asked the same question twice, like he was laughing.
Pressed for a straight answer, Pacquiao said it?s something he can think about when the right time comes.
Not now. Not today.
?P?wede pag-isipan (I can think it over),? said Pacquiao, all set for a meeting with the Top Rank chief in Las Vegas this week.
Arum has taken up the very lucrative ?Dream Match? with Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer. The idea was actually hatched by the great boxing commentator Larry Merchant.
?It?s there and people are talking about it,? said Arum, expected to announce this week who Pacquiao?s next opponent is ? whether it?s David Diaz or Juan Manuel Marquez.
Roach, the trainer, said the Dela Hoya fight sounds unrealistic for the moment.
?When people ask me about it I just tell them that when it?s realistic we?ll talk about it. The size difference between the two guys is too much,? Roach told Boxingconfidential.com.
Roach was laughing, too, according to Michael Marley.
?Personally I don?t think the fight will ever happen,? said Roach who need not explain that Dela Hoya at 147 lbs is just too big or too strong for Pacquiao at 130 lbs.
It was even suggested that the two superstars fight at a catch weight of 140 lbs.
?I just don?t see it,? Roach said.
