WBC plans to set up its own boxing television

MANILA, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) — The World Boxing Council (WBC) is planning to set up its own boxing television, said the organization in a statement released Tuesday night in the Philippines’ capital of Manila.

“If the NFL (National Football League), NBA (National Basketball Association), MLB (Major League Baseball) and NHL (National Hockey League) have their own television stations, why not boxing?” the WBC statement said, referring to major sports organizations in the United States.

The statement was made during the ongoing 45th WBC Convention set on Nov. 11-17 at the Manila Hotel.

“This will give opportunities to promoters and boxers not supported by big television networks and our beloved sports will flourish,” according to the statement.

Earlier, WBC President Jose Sulaiman told the media that monopoly of the big television networks are among the major problems the WBC is facing.

“The concern of the current big television networks control over boxing, supporting only a few boxers and promoters, leaving the rest of boxers without care and opportunities to most of the other promoters and boxers of the world,” said Sulaiman.

In a show of gratitude, the WBC passed a resolution earlier recognizing smaller television networks for their support for boxing events.

Without the support of smaller television networks, boxing would die, said the WBC.
