After skipping the world championships for men in Serbia owing to Covid-19 restrictions, the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) is keen on fielding a squad to the women’s tournament in Istanbul, Turkey, in December.
ABAP secretary general Ed Picson said the composition of the team and coaching staff is undergoing review.
“We are doing an evaluation and this includes foreign training,” Picson told Daily Tribune yesterday.
The decision to skip the Serbian worlds that takes place in the capital of Belgrade starting late this month was a heartbreaking decision since there were available boxers.
However, due to the inability to train properly in Baguio City, home of the ABAP, and the immense hassle of foreign travel, it was decided that the Serbian slugfest be bypassed.
A team headed by veteran Rogen Ladon, the 2015 bronze medalist, was supposed to campaign there.
Picson could not pinpoint who among the women punchers would go although the team is loaded with world-class talent.
The top lady fighter is no other than Tokyo silver medalist Nesthy Petecio.
Also on the team are Olympics quarterfinalist Irish Magno as well as former world champion and five-time Southeast Asian Games topnotcher Josie Gabuco.
