Who says Philippine boxing is heading back to dormancy following the retirement of Manny Pacquiao?
Based on what’s taking place every single day at the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, Philippine boxing is very much alive and punching.
Just ask American boxing guy Sean Gibbons of MP Promotions, who has struck a deal with Hall of Fame owner Freddie Roach to have his sweatshop on Vine Street become the new training base of at least six Filipino punchers who are now there.
Currently, Gibbons is looking after the welfare of world champion Jerwin Ancajas, ex-world champion Marlon Tapales, one-time world title challenger Jonas Sultan, Mark Magsayo and rising contender Jade Bornea.
Also working out there is Jimuel Pacquiao, son of the eight-division legend.
Arriving soon are Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Eumir Marcial and Jeo Santisima, another one-time world title challenger.
Also in the United States but training elsewhere is Reymart Gaballo, who has set up camp in Miami.
Ancajas is slated to make the tenth defense of his International Boxing Federation super-flyweight plum late next month while Sultan is attempting to take a big bite off the Big Apple on 30 October.
Tapales is also penciled for 27 November while Marcial will likely fight for the second time as a pro in December.
“We have lots of guys and lots of work to do. MP Promotions lives on with the Senator’s (Pacquiao) guidance,” Gibbons said.
