Teddy Atlas, in addition to being a Hall of Fame boxing personality, is an orator of life lessons and instructor of the sweet science, but on Thursday in West Brighton, he was simply a giver.
The native Staten Islander and longtime ESPN commentator was on hand at New Hope Church, where he was handing out apparel from his BoxRaw “36″ clothing line, and dishing out free boxing lessons to local youths on behalf of the Dr. Atlas Foundation.
For the Foundation, it’s yet another charitable endeavor among a long list of generosities, but for a community of underprivileged youth, it’s a momentous occasion and an afternoon filled with fun and smiles.
As part of the giveaway, food, drinks, and snacks, in addition to masks and water bottles, were provided to 50 children from New Hope, PS 57, St. Phillip’s, and the local community. Max’s Esca, TLC Physical Therapy, Chili’s, Chase Foundation, and UAU of West Brighton helped sponsor the event. Pastors from New Hope and volunteers from the Foundation, as well as members of the NYPD, offered assistance throughout the afternoon.
“We just wanted the kids in the area to be able to get some of the gear,” explained Atlas. “It’s great to spend time with the kids and they appreciate that. I just remind them how important they are.
