Mark Magsayo welcomed a vital member of his small entourage in the United States just days before his shot at a world title.
Nutritionist Jeaneth Aro, known for her role in helping weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz win the country’s first Olympic gold medal in Tokyo, arrived in Los Angeles on Monday night and flew to the East Coast the following morning.
Magsayo challenges Gary Russell Jr. this Saturday night (Sunday in Manila) at The Borgata in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
A 3-1 underdog, Magsayo believes he has what it takes to knock the World Boxing Council featherweight crown off the American champion’s head.
But first, Magsayo has to come in at 126 lbs or a bit under during the official weigh in on the eve of the scheduled 12-rounder.
And this is where Aro’s expertise comes in.
Even if Magsayo is cutting down on weight, Aro’s involvement enables him to get what he wants albeit by way of smaller portions.
“We are on our last stage of weight cut. His day-to-day meals have adequate proportion of carbs, protein, and fat. Just enough to match the activity of the day and target weight,” Aro said from Atlantic City.
With Aro around, Magsayo still gets his fill of rice, veggies, fish, chicken, eggs, milk soup and (beef) nilaga.
Also now with Magsayo in Atlantic City is lead trainer Freddie Roach with MP Promotions chief Sean Gibbons following anytime soon.
Magsayo sports a 23-0 record with 16 knockouts while Russell parades a 31-1 mark with 18 knockouts.
