Manny Pacquiao gave two thumbs-up signs to the two mouthguards orthodontist Dr. Ed de la Vega presented yesterday just before the Filipino boxing star worked out at the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood.
“He was very pleased (that) I did all he asked me to include in the design. The color and the exact thickness in areas he specified,” de la Vega told Daily Tribune after the brief ‘consultation” inside the gym’s tiny dressing room.
These two mouthpieces would serve two purposes, according to de la Vega.
“One for training and one for the fight,” he said.
Pacquiao kicked off the US phase of his training camp for the 21 August encounter with Errol Spence last Monday.
De la Vegas has been customizing Pacquiao’s workout and fight mouth protectors since the mid-2000s.
Aside from the eight-division champion, De la Vega also provides the mouthguards of other Filipino fighters seeing action in the United States and Mexico.
De la Vega doesn’t charge a fee as he takes pride in lending a hand to the pursuit of greatness in the ring by Filipino punchers.
The Spence showdown at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas will be Pacquiao’s first fight in over two years.
De la Vega won’t be laughing all the way to the bank after the fight, but he’d be one of the happiest if Pacquiao scores yet another monster upset.
