Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant kept apart to avoid repeat of bust-up

Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant were prevented from coming together during their fight-week press conference last night in Las Vegas.

The pair clashed during their first face-off in September when a violent brawl left Plant with a nasty gash below his eye.

But the second encounter was much more civil in Sin City with the fighters kept apart in the centre of the stage.

This made for a more relaxed atmosphere at the event with both Canelo and Plant instead laying out their plans to make history.

But the unified champion Alvarez has admitted that he let his emotions get out of “control” during their last confrontation, and his primary focus has now switched to becoming an all-time “great”.

“It’s so different when you’re in the ring, so I don’t really take anything from our altercation at the first press conference,” Alvarez said at the press conference.

“The goal is to be an all-time great. I’m so proud of the journey I’ve taken to achieve that. I’m not going to stop until I’ve tried my best to reach that goal.

“Only one thing is going through my mind, and that’s winning. Everything else is outside of my control. I only care about what’s going to happen inside of the ring Saturday night.

“My emotions are under control. I’m excited for the fight of course. I’m excited to become undisputed champion and to make history. That’s what I want. But I can remain calm, because this is what I do.”

Alvarez has had a rapid journey to an undisputed tilt, dismissing British pair Callum Smith and Billy Joe Saunders to earn their belts, with a mandatory defence against Avni Yildirim sandwiched in between.

And his vast world-level resume also includes the likes of Sergey Kovalev, Miguel Cotto and Amir Khan.

Rivalry has rarely been a problem for the 31-year-old with his opponents often showing a respectful approach to sharing the ring with him.
