Unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. is one of the best active boxers in the world. The undefeated American has shown his class beating some of the best in the division. And his bout against Manny Pacquiao showed he has no intention of stopping.
Spence Jr. and Pacquiao sent the boxing world into a frenzy when they announced they would face off on August 21. So ahead of his bout against the Filipino Senator, we look back at his fight against Chris Algieri and see what it means for Manny Pacquiao.
Even though the champion’s last three fights have gone the distance, he has an incredible knockout ratio of 78%. The best of the lot has to be his vicious knockout of former world champion Chris Algieri. The two fought in 2016 before Spence Jr. was a champion and ‘The Truth’ showed his class with a fantastic fifth-round knockout.
Spence Jr. took a measured approach to the fight in the first round. However, he found success in the latter parts of the round and, it set the tone for the bout. He then stepped on the gas from the second round and hurt Algieri with his trademark body shots to headshots combinations.
What does this mean for Manny Pacquiao? The win over Algieri was only one of 21 knockout victories for Spence Jr. Therefore the American champion has serious power. However, his next opponent, Manny Pacquiao, is not famous for his power but his speed and movement.
The Algieri fight will be more significant for the Spence Jr. vs. Pacquiao bout since Algieri faced Pacquiao in 2014. And although ‘Pac Man’ knocked him down six times, he never knocked him out.
Therefore, come August 21, Spence Jr. will go into the bout knowing he has the power advantage over Manny Pacquiao. He undoubtedly can knock out the Filipino. However, he will have to be smart to use his power against the experienced Pacquiao.
