Tokyo Olympics qualifier Eumir Marcial’s decision to set up camp in Los Angeles is turning out to be a wise decision.
As the heavy-handed middleweight prepares to return to the ring in April, his promotional and training teams are in the process of bringing in crack sparring partners to the Wild Card Boxing Club, according to MP Promotions president Sean Gibbons told Daily Tribune.
“Eumir’s sparring thrice a week with the Russian fighters and we are calling in a few more to beef up the cast,” Gibbons said.
Last December, Marcial won his debut in the pro ranks, something the Zamboanga City southpaw said will form a part of his buildup for the Tokyo Games in July to August of this year.
Marcial’s teammates only started training about two weeks ago when they were all shipped to the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna, after months of resorting to online training due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Still, even if Marcial opted to stay home, recruiting big sparmates would have been problematic given the current situation.
But in the United States, despite strict safety measures in place, boxing shows are being held with gyms allowed to operate like Freddie Roach’s landmark sweat shop on Vine Street.
During morning runs at Griffith Park, fellow MP Promotions talents Jerwin Ancajas and Mark Magsayo as well as Jonas Sultan joined Marcial.
Marcial, who secured an Olympic slot in March 2020 in Jordan, has been in the US since October.
