ANOTHER fight full of plots and subplots is set to unfold after the International Boxing Federation ordered ALA Boy Z ?The Dream? Gorres to fight Vic ?The Raging? Bull Darchinyan in an eliminator bout for the right to challenge newly-crowned Dimitri Kirilov.
Philboxing.com reported that IBF championship committee chairman Lindsey Tucker Jr. has told both parties to signify their intent to fight in an eliminator bout before Oct. 25.
Darchinyan will be on his third straight fight against a Pinoy after winning one and losing another in his previous two. Gorres will be fighting a guy who beat the same Pinoy puncher he defeated and lost to the younger brother of that fighter who now happens to be training at the same gym Gorres is.
In his first fight after losing his IBF and IBO flyweight titles to Nonito Donaire by a stunning fifth-round knockout, the 31-year-old Darchinyan (29-1, 23 KOs) floored a gallant Frederico Catubay in the final round to win the vacant IBO super flyweight titles.
On the other hand, Gorres was supposed to fight in Puerto Rico but backed out after injuring his hand in sparring.
Gorres last fought in the World Cup of boxing, beating Eric Ortiz in eight rounds. On March 19, 2005, Gorres also defeated Glenn Donaire, the older brother of Nonito, in the first round.
First defense
Now, Nonito, who will make his first defense on Dec. 1 against Luis Maldonado, is now training at the ALA gym and could perhaps give the tormentor of his brother tips on how to beat the Raging Bull.
Another interesting sub plot in the fight is that this early, Darchinyan seems to be looking past Gorres and even Kirilov and wants Fernando Montiel, the same guy who won a controversial split decision against Gorres in their title fight in Cebu.
The Gorres-Darchinyan fight is tentatively scheduled on Dec. 1 (Dec. 2 RP Time) in the US, the same day another ALA boy, Rey ?Boom-Boom? Bautista gets his first crack at redemption against Antonio Bario Meza in Manila. Also on the same day, Donaire will make his defense.
?Gorres is a very tough fighter and (is) very good, but I want everyone to see I am back and (can) beat the best,? Darchinyan told Australia?s Daily Telegraph.
?In the next year, I can win two or three (more) world titles. Slowly, my dream is happening. When I was the (flyweight world) champion, no one wanted to fight me in a unification (bout). Now, everyone wants to fight me,?? Darchinyan said.
