Canelo Alvarez was ahead on two of the three scorecards when he knocked out Sergey Kovalev in the eleventh round to become a four-weight world champion. The Mexican battled a big size difference to defeat 36-year-old Kovalev and knocked the Russian almost out cold with a right hook. Alvarez checked on Kovalev before beginning his celebrations and it seems the middleweight champion was on his way to a points victory even if he didn?t manage to stop his opponent. Two judges had Alvarez ahead on 96-94, while the third had the contest all square going into the penultimate round. Many ringside observers had Kovalev leading after ten rounds as Alvarez struggled to bypass the WBO champion?s height and reach advantage. Despite making history by becoming a four-weight world champion, Alvarez promised his fans there was more to come.
