It?s just amazing how uptight and disgruntled that so many people within boxing can come off as at times. The backlash that the Bossman ?Gordo? Marley has received in recent times due to his ?rumors? and ?sources? that have placed the Barrera-Pacquiao bout in jeopardy has been enormous. I have a feeling that maybe that?s what our crazy, old, not yet senile friend was looking for when he concocted this cockamamie idea. I?m not saying that Mr. Marley has no official sources? I?m just saying that it?s no secret that the man is crazy. Let?s take a look at some other amusing aspects of boxing that might allow us to perhaps give our teeth a rest from the grinding that?s taken place due to Mr. Cherry Suit himself.
In a sport in which two greasy, half-naked combatants try to knock each other?s heads off.
In a sport in which one fighter can dominate his opponent only to get robbed on the scorecards.
In a sport in which it takes an entire committee of ?officials? to overrule a blatant error regarding a TKO or No Contest ruling that could have been deciphered by any blind and or drunk homo-erectus.
In a sport in which a future Hall of Famer Bernard Hopkins can get fined an amount exceeding what most professional fighters make in a year of active participation within the sport due to a minor scuffle at a weigh-in.
In a sport in which an aging James ?Lights Out? Toney called an extremely old Larry Holmes ?ugly? and ?flabby?.
In a sport in which past faded superstars have more drawing power than the current rising talent.
In a sport in which none of the combatants have any formal sort of retirement fund or pension.
In a sport in which the winner of fights actually have more trouble getting fights and paydays than the loser.
In a sport in which fellow colleague Ricardo Lois can make waves with a gravy-filled rant just days leading up to the most financially lucrative pay-per-view bout of all-time.
In a sport in which most people despise those participants that follow the number one goal within boxing: hit and not be hit.
In a sport in which recycling is not only encouraged but embraced as if the world is depleting it?s natural resources of boxers? it may very well be doing so.
In a sport in which an 87 year old Evander Holyfield actually belongs within the top 10 rankings strictly based on his ability to stay in shape.
In a sport in which fighters can train for weeks upon weeks only to find out that not only will they not be fighting on the scheduled date but that they also won?t be getting paid until their fight gets rescheduled. I didn?t know boxing was a team sport?
In a sport in which the media actually attempts to come across as more important than the actual combatants within the ring.
In a sport in which Michael Marley can have the internet readers of boxing websites with their panties bunched up pouting like a three year old that didn?t get the cherry flavored lollipop but rather the disgusting lime-green version.
I think it?s time for boxing fans, the media, and virtually everyone within the sport to sit back, relax, crack open a beer or maybe even a bottle of your favorite tequila and take a deep breath. Marley stirs up the pot like yours truly slaving away when he decides to make his patented gumbo. I love boxing just as much as most of you do but once we start taking ourselves too seriously as well as the sport, it?s time to take a step back and look at all the comical issues within boxing.
So what if crazy Marley went on a Bombay Sapphire induced rampage of rumors that he heard from an acid dropping pigeon in Manhattan? Maybe he shouldn?t have done so but I find it rather amusing more so for the fact that it can affect so many people out there. Maybe now people will question everything that comes out of Boxingconfidential.com (as if they didn?t already do so) and that?s perfectly fine and understandable. I guess the main thing is that none of the staff here take themselves too seriously and we?re based on giving fans a different outlook on the sport. Most importantly we like to have? F-U-N.
What ever happened to F-U-N?
PS. This isn?t based on discrediting the sport of boxing but rather looking at the more important issues within our sport that haven?t been addressed. I don?t make gumbo with San Francisco?s Dungeness crab but rather the traditional blue crab. Nothing beats the flavor.
