Some of the inquiring minds who read Boxingconfidential.com want to know if the Joan Guzman-Humberto Soto bout is still on for Nov. 17 and, if so, what is the venue.
You ask, we answer. Yes, the great on paper matchup between the Mexican brawler and the Dominican slickster is still penciled as HBO’s main event on 11/17 but the real draw on the tube that night is the Miguel Cotto-Shane Mosley replay from their 11/10 titanic at Madison Square Garden.
The site? Still TBA or TBD. Guzman co-promoter Sycuan had logistical problems on its tribal lands but SRP VP Scott Woodworth has not given up hope of landing the show at another San Diego location. Meanwhile, Guzman co-promoter Golden Boy is on a hunt for a suitable site as well according to GBP ringleader Richard Schaefer. It is believed GBP is talking to Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun in Connecticut.
Though there’s been murmurs of this being a WBC eliminator it’s more likely to be simply a defense by the unbeaten Guzman of his WBO 130-pound title.
Soto is said to be training hard in Mexico while Guzman is grinding it out at his usual Las Vegas training site with head trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr.
In case it escaped your attention, the trainer’s son recently labeled Guzman “second best pure boxer” extant excluding only the Great Himself.
