On Wednesday afternoon, the Dallas Morning News reported that newly unified welterweight champion Errol ?The Truth? Spence, Jr. would be charged with driving while intoxicated after he miraculously escaped serious injuries following the car wreck he experienced last week. As we read about seven days ago across the news as well as social media platforms, Errol was involved in a single car crash in the wee morning hours of Thursday, October 10 in his hometown of Dallas. Many of us may have caught a glimpse of the video footage which captured the champion?s white Ferrari convertible crashing, burning and subsequently flipping across a median and into the lane of oncoming traffic.
If anything, perhaps we should be thankful that no one else, such as innocent bystanders were injured. Spence?s official spokespeople, Premier Boxing Champions allowed information and updates on the injured fighter?s condition to trickle out as last weekend approached. We were informed that somehow, someway the champion avoided breaking any bones despite being thrown from an 800 horsepower (give or take) Italian convertible sports car at a high rate of speed. Furthermore, we learned that he wasn?t wearing a seat belt, which may have saved his life in addition to the fact that his motor skills may have been hindered by the alcohol in his system. Such luck isn?t all that different from when individuals are first knocked unconscious by falling debris before being thrown great distances during a tornado.
Call it strange luck, but it?s still just that and Errol Spence, Jr. should count all of the stars in the Texas sky over the fact that he?s not dead. His profile as a professional boxer has soared to great heights over the past few years and his return to the ring may not happen for while after his unfortunate accident. It?s fair to basically put a full stop to any and all passing of judgment here. Although this writer cannot speak for everyone, many of us, including the author of this article has at one time or another operated a vehicle in such an impaired state that we couldn?t remember our own name.
We?re human and we all make mistakes, yet most of us aren?t millionaires with money to burn and the means to hire a driver and a comfortable means of transportation. Let?s hope Spence, Jr. (26-0, 21 KO?s) learns from this experience, holds off from buying a replacement Ferrari and simply lays low for a while in order to completely recuperate in more ways than just a few. The idea of being thrown from a car while it flips and burns and ultimately living to tell the tale is extraordinary. Most who recklessly speed and lose control of their vehicle don?t even know they?ve been turned into modern art on the pavement because they?ve perished long before they even make contact.
