International Boxing Federation (IBF) super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas said he will stay in the 115-pound division after his seventh title defense against Japanese Ryuichi Funai on Sunday in Stockton, California.
The 27-year-old Ancajas who stopped Funai via seventh round technical knockout also expressed his desire to fight other super flyweight world champions among them newly crowned World Boxing Council titleholder Juan Francisco Estrada of Mexico and World Boxing Association champion Khalid Yafai of Britain.
?I will prepare for them seriously. But it will all depend on my manager (Joven Jimenez) and international matchmaker Sean Gibbons whom I will fight next,? Ancajas told The Manila Times in Filipino via overseas call.
?I think I can stay for more fights here at 115 [pounds] because of the discipline and diet program implemented by my nutritionist Jeaneth Aro. I felt so good and I didn?t experience any cramps too,?added the Panabo, Davao del Norte pride.
Ancajas (31-1-2 win-loss-draw record with 21 knockouts) was thinking of moving up to bantamweight after his split draw bout against Alejandro Santiago Barrios of Mexico September 28, last year in Oakland, California.
But after his successful training at the Marine Base Corps in Ternate, Cavite, Ancajas? team decided that it would be wise for him to stay in the super flyweight class .
Gibbons agreed there is no reason for Ancajas to leave the super flyweight division for now.
?No, he feels good at 115 [pounds]. That?s why he made weight easy,? said Gibbons.
Gibbons added that it would be good to hold Ancajas? unification bout with Estrada later in the year. ?I would love a unification. Estrada is with Zanfer and Eddie Hearn, [maybe] that is possible later this year.?
