Gerry Pe?alosa’s world-class exploits in the ring have not gone unnoticed in his hometown San Carlos City.
Although he has relocated to Manila, the 35-year-old southpaw, who captured his second world boxing title Saturday night in Sacramento, California (Sunday morning in the Philippines), will be recognized by the City Government of San Carlos, Mayor Eugenio Lacson said last night. Trailing in the judges’ scorecards, Pe?alosa uncorked a killer of a left punch to the side of the body of heavily-favored Mexican Jhonny Gonzalez to win by knockout at the 2:30 mark of the seventh round of their WBO bantamweight title match.
It was Pe?alosa’s second world crown, after losing his WBC super flyweight title to South Korean In Joo-Cho in January 2000. Lacson said he will discuss with the City Council the possible award or incentive for Pe?alosa, who, in fights here and abroad, still carries the name of San Carlos City.
