World Boxing Association (WBA) regular welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao?s ultimate goal is to have a rematch with the undefeated but retired Floyd Mayweather Jr. within the year.
This was confirmed to The Manila Times on Sunday by international matchmaker Sean Gibbons after Errol Spence Jr.?s unanimous decision win by a wide margin on Sunday against Mikey Garcia at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas.
Pacquiao and Mayweather met at the venue although no formal talks were held.
But the big question is, ?Will Mayweather come out of retirement for a Pacquiao rematch??
?That is the goal still (rematch with the American boxer). But a big but is Mayweather is retired. So let?s see if Mayweather gets excited and comes out of retirement,? Gibbons said in an online interview on Sunday.
The two fighters fought in 2015 with Mayweather winning by a unanimous decision.
That Mayweather win, however, was apparently dampened after Pacquiao revealed that he fought the American with an injured shoulder.
Gibbons said a round of discussion would happen with Premier Boxing Champions this week about who Pacquiao was to fight next before they head back to Manila on Wednesday after a long weekend trip to Europe and America last week.
?The senator will speak to Al Haymon this week and we will start to move forward on discussions for the senator?s next fight,? he added as he expressed doubts on the Manny Pacquiao-Errol Spence Jr. future world title bout.
Pacquiao is an incumbent senator of the Philippines.
He was interviewed inside the ring with the victorious Spence after the bout and replied, ?Why not?? when asked if he was willing to fight Spence next.
Even though the 40-year-old Filipino boxing icon accepted Spence?s challenge after his unanimous decision victory against Garcia, Gibbons believes the fight is not going to materialize this year.
