What’s fair is fair and the fact that Top Rank is showcasing the Erik Morales-David Diaz bout on HBO Pay-Per-View and has not received even a smidgen of the criticism Golden Boy Promotions been privy to in the past for far better shows is just plain wrong. Maybe it’s due to the fact that “El Terrible’s” potentially last fight was promoted with relative non-effort is the reason why.
Who knows?
All I know is that for some reason Golden Boy Promotions is under constant fire from the general boxing writers and that with the lack of persecution for this Saturday’s pay-per-view show it exposes the media’s one-sided argument. While I don’t believe that De la Hoya’s company has necessarily revolutionized the sport of boxing just yet, I believe that people are much too quick to jump the gun stating that his company is bad for the sport.
When did Don King and Bob Arum all of a sudden become the saviors of our sport?
I clearly remember King being the major villain of the 80’s having had Mike Tyson and Julio Cesar Chavez under DKP. Mr. Arum was vilified in the 90’s when he had Oscar De la Hoya, Floyd Mayweather Jr., and a slew of other top fighters under Top Rank.
I guess the cycle continues as the bitter boxing fans and writers look for a scapegoat to blame their tears and tantrums on. Speaking with pure fanatics of the sport that don’t worry themselves with the details and intricacies of boxing promotions and financial statistics, they seem to enjoy the shows that Golden Boy Promotions compiles.
Maybe the media aka Lois’s of the world need to take a step back, wipe those tears from their eyes and just sit back and enjoy the ride…
PS. I’m not saying that Top Rank, Don King, or Golden Boy Promotions should be villified for anything. I as a boxing fan have the choice to purchase or not to purchase any of the shows they put together. Questions/Comments: [email protected]
