SACRAMENTO, California — Competing fighters from the Philippines and Mexico are super ready for the supremacy duels but organizers were at a loss Wednesday night on how to score and award the World Cup of Boxing that will be disputed at the Arco Arena here on Saturday night (Sunday morning in Manila).
A problem exploded in the World Boxing Organization junior flyweight eliminator between Filipino Bert Batawang and Gerardo Verde after the Mexican was pulled out of the cast due to a detached retina.
The fight was cancelled outright, thus leaving only an even six bouts in the original seven-fight card that should momentarily determine the greater boxing nation between the Philippines and Mexico.
Batawang, 35, told the Philippine Daily Inquirer he was terribly disappointed after having labored hard for over two months with the hope of next going for a world crown after his Saturday night match.
?It?s a pity,? said youthful Michael Aldeguer, who has taken over the management of the RP team from his father, the well-admired sportsman Antonio Aldeguer of Cebu.
The young Aldeguer, who Wednesday had a lengthy meeting with Golden Boy Promotions executive Eric Gomez at the downtown Vagabond Inn where the RP boxers are quartered, said organizers were expected to come up with a solution to be bared in a press conference Friday.
