As Boholano boxer Czar Amonsot heads back home today, another disheartening news struck the fabled ALA Boxing Gym.
ALA big boss Antonio “Bidoy” L. Aldeguer informed The Freeman yesterday that one of his prized fighters, Z “The Dream” Gorres, may be pulled out of the keenly-awaited Boxing World Cup featuring Philippines vs. Mexico because of an eye problem that was spotted during a mandatory medical check-up conducted in Los Angeles.
“After a mandatory medical check-up of the Philippine Team boxers, another bad news.. Doctors found something in the eye of Gorres which may keep him out of the August 11 Boxing World Cup,” said Aldeguer via text message.
Although Gorres is yet to see an eye specialist at 4 pm today (LA time) to verify the findings, Aldeguer said it appears that Gorres’ chances to fight Gerson Guerrero in the August 11 card at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, California is very remote.
During the medical check-up, which is a standard operating procedure for any boxer who will fight in the United States, the doctors found a slight tear in the retina of Gorres, thus, his bout against Guererro has been put on hold pending the results of the examination that will be performed by an eye specialist today.
The retina is the nerve that lines the back of the eye and picks up light and sends it to the brain so you can recognize it as an image.
In the event Gorres will be kicked out of the multi-million show, Diosdado Gabi is being considered to replace Gorres and slug it out with Guerrero.
Eye experts believe that the tear in the retina can be repaired, but it would take some time before Gorres could be cleared to fight again.
There were many boxers in the past who suffered a tear or detached retinas, but returned to the ring after receiving appropriate medical treatment. The most prominent was the legendary Sugar Ray Leonard, who underwent surgery for a detached retina in the left eye and came out of retirement to fight again and defeat Marvin Hagler by controversial decision.
