Daly City eyed for Ancajas defense

World champion Jerwin Ancajas? US tour travels to the San Francisco Bay Area in October, Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum said yesterday.

Arum, head of Top Rank, told the Manila Bulletin that Daly City, where there is a large concentration of Filipinos, is being eyed to host Ancajas? sixth defense of the International Boxing Federation (IBF) super-flyweight crown.

Located just outside San Francisco, Daly City?s population is 33 percent Filipino and Arum wants to pack the venue that will host Ancajas? choice of defense.

The most likely venue is the 77-year-old Cow Palace, which can accommodate 15,000 spectators.

During its early years and up until the 1980s, it hosted boxing, most notable of its visitors having been Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson and Gabriel ?Flash? Elorde, who fought there thrice.

Ancajas? recent fight, a unanimous decision over compatriot and mandatory challenger Jonas Sultan, though held on California soil, took place in the retirement city of Fresno, an agricultural city between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
