Condes eyes $ 150,000 plus other perks

THERE IS no rematch clause in the fight contract that newly-crowned International Boxing Federation (IBF) minimumweight king Florante Condes signed with Indonesian promoters, making it doable for the Filipino puncher to showcase his wares on local soil soon.

“There’s none,” said Condes’ manager Aljoe Jaro yesterday when told about a report in The Jakarta Post that said a rematch between Condes and vanquished Indonesian champion Muhammad Rachman will be staged in Jakarta in December.

“If the price is right, we will be more than willing to go back there and defend the (International Boxing Federation) crown,” said Jaro.

Just how much would the damage be on the Indonesian’s part?

“$ 150,000,” said Jaro.

Aside from the hefty purse, Jaro also has 10 other demands like his preference for a five-star hotel and other perks befitting a world champion.

If the Indonesians don’t bite, Jaro said Manila is raring to host a Condes defense of the IBF 105-lb throne possibly against “a Latino.”

“Filipino fight fans have grown tired of Asian challengers so we are looking at the possibility of bringing in a Panamanian” whose name Jaro could not remember at the moment although he said he has a contact who has what it takes to deliver the goods.”

Condes had taken the IBF diadem with a hard-earned 12-round split decision over Rachman over the weekend at the RCTI TV Studio in Jakarta.

In knocking the crown off Rachman’s head, Condes only earned $ 3,700 since the fight was decided on a purse bid. Rachman was awarded $ 21,300 although The Jakarta Post reported that the 35-year-old ex-champion also received bonuses from private sponsors.

The group of Rod Nazario, who gave Manny Pacquiao his big break on US soil in 2001, has expressed interest in promoting Condes in the country.

Nazario is the registered business manager of Condes and super-bantam Bernabe Concepcion, another marquee fighter from Jaro’s stable based in Binangonan, Rizal.
