MANILA, Philippines — The two parties engaged in a legal war to gain promotional rights to the fights of Filipino ring sensation Manny Pacquiao have agreed to look into the possibility of a “sharing” scheme — a significant development that could seal the deal for lucrative fights in the next two years.
If Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions settle on a shared promotional rights scheme, Pacquiao could find himself in a cash-rich epic rematch with Mexican Marco Antonio Barrera this year and two more bouts that will ice an intriguing trilogy against reigning world super featherweight king Juan Manuel Marquez next year.
The legal battle, however, prevents Pacquiao, currently inked with Arum’s Top Rank, from setting a date with either of the two Mexicans, who are under contract with Oscar De La Hoya’s GBP.
But after a day-long court-mandated mediation on Sunday, both GBP and Top Rank agreed to work toward a final resolution of the promotional impasse. They will resume talks on Monday (Tuesday, Manila time).
“Those close to the [Pacquiao Peace Talks] are saying that there has been some talk of the two giant companies ‘sharing’ rights to Pacman bouts,” reported Michael Marley of Boxingconfidential.
