According to IBF championship chairman Lindsey Tucker, Gorres may be given a chance to fight in an eliminator for the no. 2 spot, or opt to fight a highly-rated fighter to get a chance to become a mandatory contender.
The vacant IBF superflyweight title will be filled up on June 30 when Russian Dmitri Kirilov takes on Mexican Ricardo Vargas at the Olympisky Sport Hall in Moscow.
According to the IBF, the winner of that fight will have four months to do a choice defense, after which he should defend his title in a mandatory fight.
Gorres is set to fight highly-rated Gerson Guerrero at the ‘World Cup’ on August 11 in Sacramento, California. A victory over Guerrero will almost likely improve Gorres’ current standing of no. 7 in the IBF rankings, and should improve his chances for an eliminator or get him an outright mandatory status.
Gorres is set to fly to the US on June 25, along with Rey ‘Boom Boom’ Bautista and AJ Banal, to start training for the August 11 ‘World Cup’ at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Gym.
Cebu sportsman Antonio L. Aldeguer, who manages Gorres, had earlier indicated that a rematch with WBO superfly champion Fernando Montiel is out of the equation.
Montiel successfully defended his title with a split decision over Gorres last February 24 in a fight where most ringsiders thought Gorres should have won.
